The Buddy Reading Programme was established to bring the enjoyment and benefits of storytelling to children who would otherwise not have had the experience at home or school.
On a weekly basis, volunteers of all ages visit various local community centers and schools to read age-appropriate stories to children. These sessions are led by a volunteer leader who is responsible for planning, running and overseeing each session.
Within the reading session lasting 1 - 1.5 hours, the children at the community centers and schools get a chance to be read to and take part in fun ice-breaking and learning games during the reading session.
Buddy Reading aims to...
Enhance literacy development in kids from low-income families
Promote reading for pleasure
Improve social and communication skills
Increase kids’ confidence in using English in their daily lives and at school
Volunteer Training
All Buddy Reading Volunteers are required to attend a 2-hour training workshop to familiarize them with the aims of Buddy Reading, an understanding of our beneficiaries, read aloud and shared reading skills. With a $100HKD fee, volunteers receive the training session and a volunteer t-shirt.

Family Volunteering
Families can share their love of reading with kids from low-income families. Family Volunteering is one way for parents, guardians, and children age 8 or above to get involved in a meaningful weekend activity together and enjoy the value of helping others. Kindly note, it is mandatory for volunteers age 8 - 12 to join with their parents/guardians.
Each family member has the chance to read English storybooks to small groups of children at community centers and schools across Hong Kong. Volunteers participate in training workshops to learn shared reading techniques; questioning, parts of a book, and some information about the beneficiary you are supporting. Please see the following instructions on how to sign up as Buddy Reading Family Volunteer.
